The mountain range

The Sierra Nevada is a mountain massif in southern Spain located in the region of Andalusia. The mountain range extends for about 75 kilometers in the central and south-eastern part of the province of Granada and covers part of the southwestern area of the province of Almeria.

The mountain range includes the highest mountain in the Iberian Peninsula, the monte Mulhacén, which represents, after the Alps, the highest peak in Western Europe.

Rivers, gorges, ravines, lakes and the beautiful cultivated valleys of the Alpujarra are an ideal landscape for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

In 1986 the Sierra Nevada was declared UNESCO biosphere reserve. Due to its landscape and botanical value, much of the territory has been included in the Sierra Nevada National Park (the largest Spanish national park with an extension of 86 hectares that is home to about 2100 species of plants and about 5 ibex).
